Back in October we revealed how the Council was going to spend £100,000 on the Fairfield to ‘work out what they wanted to do with the place’
Our October Post revealing £100,000 to be spent on consultants for Fairfield
Finally we have the next piece in the jigsaw. The consultants have been appointed and they turn out to be Keith Williams Architects. The contract is titled ‘Croydon Cultural Venue Options Study’. The terms of reference for the study have not been published, but according to the press coverage in the Croydon Guardian they will be looking at design options as well as funding.
Funding is the crucial part of this, because the Fairfield still does not receive a revenue grant from the Council and it is not managing to break even or make a surplus.
Does this expenditure mean that the Council is considering putting in financial support? The council does not have a good track record on the funding of the Arts, but if it is about to change its position then that has to be warmly welcomed.
There is a note of caution on this because the press article indicates that the consultants will report back ‘in the Spring’. That is surely not enough time to do proper designs, consult with stakeholders and the public and identify funding sources?
